Democracy, Disagreement and the Educated Citizen

A lecture-based civic education program that examines the role of disagreement in sustaining a healthy democracy and pluralistic society.

Rather than focusing on individual dialogue techniques, the presentation explores ideological diversity, free speech in higher education, and the responsibilities of educated citizens within democratic institutions and the workforce. Emphasizing understanding over persuasion, the program situates disagreement as a civic necessity and highlights how colleges and universities can model intellectual openness and democratic norms.

 

This event is part of the Spring 2026 Civil Discourse Series hosted by the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. 

The series will offer students, faculty, and staff opportunities to explore complex social issues through facilitated conversations, panels, and interactive programs that emphasize listening, empathy, and constructive communication.
